Broody Speckledy

Postby Paul Aitken on Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:12 pm

Hi

We got a Ginger Nut, Speckledy, Bluebelle and Black Rock off you in Feb, they're doing great and loving the free range life. Until a few days ago we were getting four eggs a day until the speckledy (nicknamed neurotic nancy) went broody. I'm quite happy to let it run it's course if it makes her happy. Any advice please on the best course to take

Cheers

Paul

Its unusual for a Speckledy to brood, although not unheard of, we have never had one!!!

Are you sure she is broody??? She may be having a break from laying for a day or two.

If she is broody she wont lay, come out of the nest box & she will be a wild woman when you approach her!!!..If she is broody you will know what I mean!

The best thing to do?

Either get some fertile eggs & stick them under her OR dont let her sit on anything & HOPEFULLY she will get fed up & come off, sometimes they do, sometimes they dont, sometimes it can go on for months!!!

Just make sure she is getting off the neat at least once a day for a poop & to eat & drink.

Cheers Karen :)

Thanks karen

She was definately as you described but I've been encouraging her off the nest and she finally seems to have got the hint, not started laying again yet though. I think I'll get some fertile eggs if she goes again sounds like a great idea.

Cheers
